Takashi Murakami

Takashi Murakami is one of the most well-known and popular Japanese artists alive today. Murakami’s work is heavily influenced by Japanese anime and manga, traditional Japanese arts, and American Pop art.

Art Movement/Techniques

Pop art is an art movement that emerged in the United Kingdom and the United States during the mid- to late-1950s. The movement presented a challenge to traditions of fine art by including imagery from popular and mass cultures, such as advertising, comic books, and mundane cultural objects.

In 2001, Murakami developed a style of art called Superflat. Superflat uses bright colors and repetitive designs that reflect popular Japanese culture. Often categorized as a Japanese form of Pop Art, Superflat has become an international phenomenon reinvigorating Pop Art.

Traditional Pen & Ink

Pen & Ink is often black and white, but not always. Elements like shading and color gradients are absent, allowing the focus to rest firmly on the lines themselves.
