CERAMICS: PINCH POT

ROLL

Roll your clay into a ball before you start to create any project. This will give you a good starting point.

STEP 2

With the ball secured in one hand, use your thumb, on the other hand, to press your thumb through the middle. Don’t go all the way down as your pot needs a bottom! Leave half an inch of clay as your bottom.

STEP 3

Gradually widen the hole by pinching the clay with your thumb and fingers, rotating the clay in your hand as you work around the ball. Watch as the ball begins to open up into a bowl! Work with light pinches! If you work too quickly or squeeze too hard you can distort the round shape! It is best to go around the bowl many times with light pinches a produce a perfect pot rather than quickly make a pot with big pinches (you will end up with a distorted slump).

STEP 4

Keep pinching the clay up and around in a circle until you have a pot that has walls that are smooth, even, and are half an inch thick.
