The theme of this lesson set is “The Lives of the Artists”. Students will learn about the lives of famous artists, such as Amedeo Modigliani, and how their lives ultimately influenced their artistic styles. Students will understand that the events of their lives can affect their own artmaking as well.
During Lesson One, students will learn about the life of Amedeo Modigliani and how the events of his life may have influenced his incredibly distinctive style. Modigliani is most well known for his portrait paintings and sculptures. The most noticeable characteristic of his portraits is elongation of the face and figure. Though, initially, his work was not well-received, his work is now very regarded quite highly. He was a truly unique artist, whose artwork cannot be placed into any art movement or confining category.
After being introduced to Amedeo Modigliani and his artistic style, students will create their own self-portraits in the style of this artist using oil pastels and black construction paper.
